The fire dropped into John Brown Canyon to the main road accessing the fire from the Gateway Incident Command post. This fire was burning in ponderosa pine, pinon pine and juniper 38 miles southwest of Grand Junction, CO. Long range spotting, shifting winds and 40-100 foot flame lengths were challenging suppression efforts. Four outbuildings (old mine structures) and a powerline have been destroyed. Historic mining structures, residences, a radio tower, and powerlines were threatened.

Numerous cooperating agencies supported the fire operation including School District #51, Gateway - Unaweep Volunteer Fire Department, Mesa County Sheriff's  Department,  Mesa County Road and Bridge Department, Mesa County Emergency Management, Colorado State Forest Service, Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado Highway Patrol, U.S. Forest service, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Weather Service and the Bureau of Land management.

Location: 38 miles south of Grand Junction, CO, three miles south of Gateway, CO
Aircraft: 4 helicopters ( 1 Type 1, 2 Type 2 and 1 Type 3)
Crews: 10 crews at the height of the fire.
Engines: 16 engines, 5 water tenders, 4 dozers.
Losses: 4 outbuildings, 1 powerline.
Injuries: none
Threatened Structures Six structures, mostly historic mining structures, 5 communications towers and 4 powerlines.
