Welcome to the Bull Elk Park fire web page.  This CD is a recreation of the web page that was put up at the base camp of the Bull Elk Park fire.
The base camp was located a few miles north of Burgess Junction, Wyoming.  It was a remarkable place to put up a web page because it was so remote.  There was (and probably still is) only one phone on the whole mountain.  We were fortunate to have the FEMA communications truck at the incident.  Without that, putting up a web page would have meant driving to the US Forest Service office in Sheridan, Wyoming, about a four hour round trip due to road construction.   The page was posted on July 28, 1999 and was continuously updated until Aug 3, 1999 when the webmaster was demobilized.

I was pleased (to put it mildly) to be part of the effort to pioneer posting a web page from a fire.  We can boast of a few "firsts":

The first web page from a fire in the Rocky Mountain region, among the first in the nation.

The first incident to use sound on a web page from an incident, featuring another 1st, the automated RAWS station.

The first to offer the ability to deliver email to firefighters anywhere on the incident.

The first to have a link to a web page appear in the National Situation Report (August 1, 1999).

This web site was preserved on CD at the request of the Incident Commander, Joe Hartman, so that anyone who cares to can learn from what we did, the good and the not-so-good  Included here is the report from the incident with recommendations for future web pages. I wish to thank Joe and the rest of Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team A for, what was for me, a dream assignment.  I was encouraged to be creative and innovative and was given all the support possible.  I will measure any future assignment against the Bull Elk Park Fire.
